Who Is Jesus?

Many people say that they would believe in God if only they could see some evidence of His existence. If only God would reveal who He is, perform some supernatural miracle, or do some other amazing thing, then they would be convinced that God is real.

The fact is, God has provided us with the evidence to satisfy our longing to know who He is and what He is like. The proof can be found in the person of Jesus Christ.

So, who was He?

On a human level, Jesus was a man who lived over 2000 years ago in an obscure corner of the Roman Empire. He was born in a town called Bethlehem and grew up in a place called Nazareth. He then started to change people’s lives by the things that He said and did.

There are few serious historians today who doubt that Jesus ever existed. The evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of His life on earth. Of course, we have no pictures, film clips or human relations to use as evidence, but that is also true for many figures from history whose existence is not denied because of the lack of such evidence. Such proof of existence is not available for Alexander the Great, but nobody seriously doubts that he was a person who really lived. The same could be said for Lord Nelson – we have no evidence of his actual existence apart from what is recorded about him but there are very few people who would doubt that Nelson once lived.

The question is not really about whether Jesus actually lived – but rather, ‘Who was He?’ Jesus was more than simply a man who existed in history. Today, the life of Jesus continues to influence the world and its people more than any other person has ever done before or since He lived on the earth.

Hundreds of years before Jesus was even born there were hints that He would be a special man. He fulfilled over 300 predictions spoken by different voices over hundreds of years. On the day He died, Jesus fulfilled 29 major predictions.

Whilst it could be suggested that Jesus was a clever conman – some of these predictions were impossible for Him to have any control over, such as the place of His birth, or what happened to His body after He died!

Jesus lived His life in a way that provides evidence to suggest that He was more than just a man. By looking at Jesus’ life we can find evidence that helps us to answer our other question, ‘Is God real?’

What relevance does this have for me?

Jesus said throughout His ministry that if we want to see what God is like, all we need to do is look at Him. In other word’s, Jesus was God in human form. The way He lived, the things He said, and the amazing things He did, prove that the claims made about Him were accurate.

One of the things that the Bible tells us about Jesus is that He satisfies the hunger inside all human beings for meaning in life. The way Jesus described it was by saying, “I am the bread of life…”. We all have that God shaped hole inside us which just cannot be satisfied by anything else that we try to fill it with.

Freddy Mercury once said, ‘You can have everything in the world and still be the loneliest man. Success has brought me world idolisation and millions of pounds, but it’s prevented me from having the one thing we all need – a loving, ongoing relationship”.

You may be saying right now “I have everything I need. My life is full and I try to lead a good life.”
